Two LA InterContinentals compared: Downtown for the views and the rooftop bar, Century City for the big balconies and a much quieter stay.

A small, private Club World mini-cabin on the 787-9, with unusually good service. The 2-3-2 layout still means climbing over a neighbour.

American's 777-200 to Los Angeles has good bones: a comfortable seat, Casper bedding, Bose headphones. Service and the drinks list are the weak part.

The only lie-flat seat on the transcon. A 2-2 cabin that suits couples, sharp screens and good headphones, with Prosecco standing in for Champagne.

The upper deck is the one to book: big storage bins and real privacy at the window. No Wi-Fi, poor headphones, and service that stops at polite.
